Winter Magic Starts Outside: How I Keep My Kids Playing Outdoors In Winter

Winter Magic Starts Outside: How I Keep My Kids Playing Outdoors In Winter

I’ll be honest, winter can make outdoor play feel a whole lot harder.

The colder mornings, wet grass, muddy clothes, and endless washing can sometimes make staying inside feel like the easier option, especially with little ones. But I’ve also noticed that my kids are always happier after getting outside, even if it’s only for a short time.

Fresh air, messy play, puddles, mud kitchens, potion play… it somehow resets everyone a little bit.

So if you’ve been struggling with what to do with the kids during the colder months, here are a few things that genuinely help us keep the outdoor magic going through winter.

Add Warm Water To Potion Play & Mud Kitchens

This is probably my biggest winter play tip.

I started using warm water in our mud kitchen and potion play setups and it honestly made such a difference for my daughter. She stays interested for so much longer because her little hands are not freezing, and as a bonus, fizzing potion play works even better with warm water too.

Some days it’s literally just:

  • a bowl of warm water
  • a spoon
  • a few scoops
  • flowers or leaves from outside
  • and some potion powders

And somehow that turns into 45 minutes of play.

It really reminded me that kids do not actually need huge setups to create magic.

Use A Waterproof Mat For Easy Winter Play

One thing that has made outdoor play SO much easier for me is having a waterproof mat outside.

I absolutely love mine. It keeps little bums dry while sitting on wet grass, gives them a spot to set up potion play or sensory activities, and cleanup is incredibly easy afterwards, I literally just throw it in the wash.

Especially in winter, anything that makes cleanup easier is a win.

Dress For Puddles & Mud

Honestly, outdoor winter play became much less stressful once I stopped trying to keep everyone clean. A good pair of waterproof overalls changes everything.

Once they’re dressed for the occasion, you can actually relax and let them enjoy themselves properly. Let them jump in puddles, make muddy soups, get wet, get messy, and explore.

Some of my favourite waterproof options are from

Therm NZ
or the Mum 2 Mum range you can find at Farmers.

Hot tip, keep a few old towels by the door ready to go. Future you will thank you.

It Doesn’t Need To Be Pinterest Perfect

I never really thought play had to be Pinterest perfect. But running a business, I’m often trying to create those picture-perfect moments for social media. The thing is though, I know my daughter doesn’t want a camera in her face, she just wants to play, explore and enjoy the moment.
And honestly? Those are usually the moments that end up feeling the most magical anyway.

Most of the time kids do not care if everything matches or looks aesthetic. They just want the freedom to create.

Some of our best outdoor play moments have come from the simplest things:

  • a bucket of water
  • some mud
  • a spoon
  • a few flowers
  • and imagination

You do not need elaborate setups to create magical play memories.

Add Little Outdoor Adventures

One thing that always works when the kids are feeling a bit stuck inside is a scavenger hunt. It gives them a reason to explore, notice little things outside, and turns even a cold day into a mini adventure.

We made a free printable Kids Garden Scavenger Hunt that’s perfect for winter outdoor exploring:

Some Days It’s Only 10 Minutes, And That Still Counts

Not every outdoor play session needs to last hours. Sometimes we’re outside for ages. Sometimes it’s ten minutes before everyone wants snacks, dry socks, and cuddles on the couch.

Both count.

Because at the end of the day, childhood memories are not made from perfect weather or perfect setups. They’re made from muddy puddles, warm potion play, wet gumboots, little adventures, and moments of magic outside.
